Scott Schnepf: Printmaker

Two Views of Amsterdam Scott Schnepf: Printmaker ran June 19 through September 12, 2015. This collection of etchings, engravings and woodcuts includes the intricate woodcut, Topology . In Mathematics defined as the study of geometric properties and spatial relations unaffected by the continuous change of shape or size of figures.

Currently Scott Schnepf lives in South Berwick, Maine. From 1981 to 2015 he was a professor of art at the University of New Hampshire, where he taught all levels of printmaking, drawing, and painting. He served as chairperson of the department for 6 years and in 2008 he was chosen to receive the Lindberg Award for outstanding teaching and scholarship within the College of Liberal Arts. Fish

His work has been exhibited throughout the country and is included in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress, the Currier Art Museum, the Portland Museum of Art, and numerous universities, corporate and private collections. He received a BA degree from Augustana College in South Dakota where he studied with Carl Grupp and received an MFA from Kansas State University where he studied with James Munce.

Scott states, “My work has always been rooted in the things and places that comprise my daily existence. I have faith, strengthened through years of experience, that sustained direct observation of the things that comprise my life is both rewarding and meaningful. For quite some time my imagery has been dominated by the still life. The capacity of the objects I use to serve as vessels which carry meaning is fundamental to my work. Over the years I have come to realize that my work must proceed from visual impulses not from any narrative ideas. Whatever narrative enters into my imagery (and I do believe that all imagery contains some form of narrative) is a byproduct of the process which involves long hours of contemplation and observation.Garden At a certain point in the development of any image I discard the actual set-up or source and work toward completion based solely on the demands of the piece itself. I find myself shifting from one process to another at somewhat regular intervals. The differing types of resistance offered by each process helps me to keep a fresh and open attitude toward image making. ¬†Looking back over 30 years of sustained work I find myself engaged with many of the same issues on a recurring basis.”
