Donna Catanzaro: Universe of Wit and Irony

Donna Catanzaro: Universe of Wit and Irony ran April 11 through June 14, 2008 with a collection of digital collages.  In her piece Obsessed with Oil Donna reminds us of the impact our oil consumption has world wide.  Do We Have Enough Stuff Yet pokes at our consumer culture.

Obsessed with OilDonna Catanzaro explains “I create zany, dream-like digital collages with my favorite tool, Adobe Photoshop.  I research topics and then juxtapose my own photographs and paintings with vintage graphics from old magazines and publications to create new realities and make comments on popular culture.  My goal is to entice the viewer into the piece through amusement, and the subtly challenge them with an underlying or sober comment.

I grew up on a small island in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island which has influenced my artwork. Ocean images are prevalent in my work as well as religious and cultural icons for my childhood. For many years I painted abstract landscapes in oils and watercolor but now I find I can better express myself and my visions digitally on the computer. I currently teach graphic design at Hesser College in NH, and have an MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts from Goddard College, Plainfield, Vermont.”

Currently residing in Windham, NH, Donna has exhibit extensively including Biennial, 2007, NH Institute of Art, Manchester, NH; Sham to Shame, Women Made Gallery, Chicago, IL; Inhabiting an Expansive Terrain, Wentworth Institute of Technology, Boston, MA and WCA NE Regional Juried Exhibit, Bunker Hill Community College, Charlestown, MA.
