Artist Statement - Suzanne Pretty
In the image above is the tapestry Divided Landscape being woven from the back , below is the front of the tapestry and the design. This piece will be in the American Tapestry Biennal 8 opening October 6 in Lincoln, Nebraska and then in January in Lowell, Massachesetts. Divided Landscape has been awarded first prize.
This tapestry depicts the struggle between technology and the natural world, a theme that has obsessed my work for a number of years. In the love/hate relationship existing between modern technology and the natural environment, lip service is given to the natural world while technology bulldozes through the environment both literally and figuratively. This struggle is a world of contrast and conflict.
I have been exploring paper weavings and other multi-media techniques. I find paper weavings a fascinating interaction of the woven elements of the warp and weft. Tapestry weaving is a very labor intensive process. The paper weavings are similar to sketches allowing me to work with contrasting textures, images and colors. This medium suits the subject of the fragmenting landscape cut apart and pieced together.
